Fibre | The Facts

Fibre isnt always the first thing people think about when it comes to food, but it quietly does a lot of the heavy lifting around our bodies, and plays a big part in how you feel day to day.

But for such an important nutrient, the reality is, most of us could probably do with a bit more of it. Adults need 30g a day, but according to the Food & Drink Federation (2025), most adults are only hitting 16g-18g a day.

So theres a clear need to fill up on fibre, but the good news is that it doesnt need to be complicated.

In this blog well break down what exactly fibre is, why its important and how we can support you in meeting your daily requirements.

What is fibre?

Fibre is found in plant-based foods like vegetables, beans, lentils and wholegrains. Unlike other nutrients, our bodies don’t fully break it down – it passes through, helping to support digestion along the way.

There are two types, and both play their part:

Soluble fibre helps support gut health and keeps things balanced

Insoluble fibre helps keep everything moving as it should

A mix of both, from real food, is what matters most.

Why getting enough fibre is important

Adding more fibre into your meals can have a real impact, without you even noticing it day to day.

It supports your gut

Fibre helps feed the good bacteria, keeping your digestive system balanced

It helps you feel fuller for longer

Meals with fibre tend to keep you going, without the dips.

It keeps energy steady

Slower digestion means fewer spikes and crashes

It supports overall health

A balanced diet with enough fibre is linked to better long-term health

Getting more fibre, the easy way

Because we cook with real ingredients, a lot of what we make naturally includes fibre: Beans, lentils and vegetables are at the heart of many of our soups and meals, so it’s something that’s built in, rather than added on.

And luckily, adding more fibre to your own diet doesn’t have to mean changing everything. Sometimes it’s as simple as swapping in a different lunch, or choosing a more balanced dinner a couple of times a week.

Some of our fibre-friendly Big Pot Co favourites include:

•Lentil & Bacon Soup

•Minestrone Soup

•Chilli Con Carne & Rice

•Fajita Chicken & Brown Rice

•Butternut Squash & Bean Stew

•Sweet Potato & Lentil Curry

•Chickpea Curry & Brown Rice

And the great news is that all our meals are made in small batches by us in the heart of Northern Ireland, meaning we’ve done all the hard work.

So while fibre plays an important role in how we feel day to day, but it doesn’t need to be complicated. When your meals are built around real ingredients, you’re already on the right track.
