Protein Done Properly
Posted On: 25/03/2026
Protein gets talked about a lot, and while it can sometimes feel like yet another thing to think about, it’s actually just a natural part of eating well.
At its simplest, protein helps keep you going. It plays a role in how full you feel after a meal, supports your body day to day, and helps bring balance to what you eat. And like most things when it comes to food…it doesn’t need to be complicated!
What is protein?
Protein is a macronutrient found in foods like meat, beans, dairy, nuts, lentils and grains. It helps build and repair the body’s tissues, and supports everything from strength to everyday energy.
It’s something we need regularly – not just when we’re being “good”, but as part of normal, everyday meals.
How much protein do we need?
In the UK, the general guideline is around 0.75g of protein per kilogram of body weight each day.
That works out at roughly 45g a day for women and 55g a day for men (Source: NHS).
Why protein is worth including in your meals
You don’t need to count grams or follow trends, but having a good source of protein in your meals can make a noticeable difference.
1.It helps you feel fuller for longer
Meals with protein tend to keep you satisfied, helping avoid the need for constant snacking.
2. It supports strength and recovery
Protein plays a role in maintaining muscle, whether you’re active or just going about your day.
3.It helps keep energy steady
Balanced meals can help avoid highs and lows.
4.It brings balance to your plate
Alongside sugars, fibre and carbohydrates, protein helps round everything out.
